I have been a member of Kettering Cycling Club for a year. I’m a Licensed Aircraft Engineer with Easyjet and have not participated in any other sports before cycling. I don’t cycle to work due to the 46 miles each side of a 10.5hour night shift making it a bit too much.
I have always been interested in cycling and have recently returned to cycling after a 19 year break due to living in London and working way too much. Before my break I cycled for pleasure back home in Scotland (120 miles at weekends were not uncommon). I enjoy cycling because it gets me fitter and makes me much more aware of my body’s ups and downs. I enjoy exploring the countryside as you see far more on two wheels than you do in a car. My favourite cycling run so far is Burton Latimer-Orlingbury-Holcot-over the causeway at pitsford-Scaldwell-Lamport-past Harrington airfield then back past Mawsley to my home in Burton Latimer.
I’m most interested in time trials because it’s ‘all about yourself’. I recall being very nervous in my first race and went off far too fast. My legs went in the first 4 miles but still managed 33.33 for 10 miles with much encouragement from passing competitors. My best cycling performance is 29.26 for 10 miles (4mins better than his first one) and the longest distance I’ve ridden recently was 50 miles last year for the cycle4cynthia charity. My sporting ambition is to get under 25 mins for 10 miles.
I have lost several people close to me to cancer and know the effects of the treatment and it is for this reason that Lance Armstrong, with his true grit and determination, is the cyclist I most admire.
Aside from cycling, I enjoy running, playing golf and I’m interested in railways of years gone by, astronomy and researching family history. My favourite food is chicken in mushroom sauce with pasta and anything with copious amounts of garlic and the odd Southern comfort to drink but mainly anything non-alcholic.
In the future I would like to see the British cycling team achieving as much success on the road as on the track.
